Pregnancy Update: Nail Polish, Maternity Jeans and Unassigned Reading

According to most baby bump sites, at 28 weeks, I'm now in my 3rd trimester! Here's what's been going on lately:

  • We started a birth preparation course called Birthing From Within. The instructor tells inspiring stories and makes us hold ice while practicing pain coping techniques. My hope is to give birth at the UCSD Birthing Center in Hillcrest. I hesitate to say "plan" because the Birthing From Within classes encourage us to be prepared but open to things that may happen that don't fit "the plan."
  • I've read the Birthing From Within book which convinced me to go with those classes instead of the Bradley Method, which is another option one of the UCSD midwives mentioned at my first prenatal appointment. I am also reading Bringing Up Bebe (which Krystal recommended in this post, and I'm loving it) as well as Ina May's Guide to Childbirth
  • I'm still painting my own toenails, though I'm not so sure I'll be able to for much longer. Freaked out by news articles like this one, I've been using a water-based polish called Safe Nail Polish that claims to be non-toxic and safe for use on little kids. The shine is sufficient, though the finish is nothing like OPI or Essie, but anyway it will do for now. A friend told me about a salon in La Jolla that uses non-toxic nail polishes and is Green Business certified, so once I can't reach my toes anymore, I'll have to go treat myself ;)
  • My sister is planning my shower in a few weeks, so I finally finished my registry. If you were to browse it you'd find lots of "crunchy" things like organic baby wipes and washcloths, cloth diapers, wool diaper covers, and Made in USA gear.
  • Shortly after writing about my maternity wardrobe and how I'd avoided buying maternity clothes, I finally bought myself some maternity jeans for $20 off the regular price. I could probably write a whole post on the subject, but I won't. Instead I'll just say you could pay as little as $5 or as much as $200 for maternity jeans but somehow they should be stylish and comfortable. I tried on many designer jeans in a variety of sizes. I like the skinny fit and though the Citizens of Humanity pair was the cutest, the part where the belly panel meets the denim was so uncomfortable. My friend has had good luck with Gap maternity jeans, and I found some cute Old Navy capri jeans at a resale shop. The key is the sit test!
  • I found a new product to add to my safe body care regimen. I had mentioned that any old cocoa butter brand will do, but since organic and Fair Trade certified products are very important to me, I set out to find a new product and here it is: Aura Cacia Cocoa Butter.
  • Last but not least, this baby is moving like crazy! And despite the shortness of breath, heartburn, Braxton Hicks, frequent urination, 23-pound weight gain (which means after a long, hot day I waddle around the house), and varicose veins in my lady parts (sorry for the detail, but seriously wha??!), I am so looking forward to being a mama to this precious miracle.

  1. What a great update! Enjoy the end, you're in the home stretch! If you want any remedies for the vericose veins call or email me, I have dealt with them on 2 pregnancies! I say good choice on your birth class, I took Bradley and had all this knowledge but little practice coping and staying relaxed during pain, hypnobirthing was a huge help but I'm sure your BWI class will achieve the same results! I have a baby bath tub you can have if you want it. GOod luck on your cloth diapering too, I have tried it before and was unsatisfied and gave up but I am just now trying again with Flip diapers and some hemp prefolds.

    1. Hi Becca! I just sent you a message about those remedies... I think Julian has a baby bath tub to give me, but if I am wrong about that, then yes, I'll take it! ;)

  2. I haven't stopped by and read in awhile since I stopped blogging - but HI!

The end of the 2nd tri and beg of the 3rd tri was my favorite time. Big enough - but not yet uncomfortable.

I did Bradley and it helped . . . but not the way I hoped it would. Things can change fast and we didn't get the birth we wanted. (signs of pre-eclampsia and super high blood pressure) But - our teacher said as long as you have a happy mama, happy baby, and happy family, it is all good.

The hardest part of the whole thing was those first couple nights home. BFing (if your planning on it) can be extremely challenging and was harder on me emotionally and physically then anything to do with the birth. I was prepared for the emotions of birth, but not for the flood of hormones associated with a newborn that first week. As a very logical practical person, I found myself a total emotional nutcase. Know that it's totally normal. :) And the physical pain was extreme. Bloody, cracked, and sever enough that I cried all day long and dreaded every feeding. But after 4 crazy weeks, mastitis, and many visits with lactation, we struck a balance between BF, FF, and EPing.

Wishing you all the best!!!! Good luck!

  3. oh my gosh honey, I am so incredibly happy and excited for you!!!

Also, I read Birthing From Within during my second pregnancy and together with the birth prep done by my Osteo, it made a HUGE difference in my birthing experience! I was so much calmer and felt both in control and ok not being in control... I didn't let myself be bossed into specific positions, especially the dreaded laying on your back BS! SO grateful to my friend for lending me that book!

p.s. If you are looking for non-toxic nail polishes in great colors (and with pretty good shine too), I love Priti Nail Polishes. I used to buy them when I was stateside. The colors are long-lasting and beautiful, and the nail polish remover (also non-toxic) works so well.
